Today's Old East Gate, also known as the YingXi Gate, was part of the former fort of Tekcham. It is a nationally designated historic site now. Tekcham was established in 1829. The fortress went through three stages of development--bamboo fort, earth fort, and finally stone fort.
Bamboo fort The initial fortification of Tekcham, which became today's Hsinchu city, was a stronghold built entirely out if bamboo.
Earth fort In 1806, new walls built of compact-earth were raised on the outside of the earlier bamboo walls in order to defend against pirates.
Stone fort The region was plagued by violence between various cultural and ethno-linguistic groups. In 1827, local leaders in Tekcham submitted proposals for the construction of permanent stone fortification.
